Mourning the Loss of Anne Arthur

Anne Virginia Ailes Arthur was called home to heaven early Sunday morning, January 29, 2012, by her beloved sisters Lillian and Martha. She was surrounded by her family and their love as she left this world to rejoin her husband, John Arthur; her mother and father Dora and Charles Ailes; and her sisters Martha Beakes and Lillian Butler in heaven. Those left will miss her dearly; for to know Anne was to love her. She accepted, loved, and allowed everyone to be their beautiful selves. Personal: Anne enjoyed playing cards, watching old movies, doing the jumble, and caring for her gorgeous African violets. Anne lovingly volunteered for many years in the Warren Hospital gift shop. Survivors: Dearest to her heart were her five children and their families, daughter Elizabeth Cody and her husband Ken McGrath, her children Elizabeth and Matthew and their spouses Robert Assande and Kathy Kalfut, and grandchildren Luke and Anna; son, Ronnie Arthur and his wife Jeanette, and their daughter Jeannine and her husband Jeremy Downing; son, John Arthur and his daughters Phyllis and Mary; and their spouses Greg Post and Rich DeSanto, and grandchildren Joshua, Jessica and Rachel; daughter, Catherine Manzella and her children Thomas and Kim, their spouses M lissa Manzella and Scott Strohecker, and grandchildren Brily, Austin, DeLaney, and Eric; son Albert Arthur and his wife Barbara, and their children Allison and Christopher, their spouses Philip May and Alison Hultin, and their grandchildren Noah and Evan. Take my hand, Precious Lord, lead me home.

Mr. William Wallace

William R. Wallace, 84, of Bethlehem, died January 19, 2012 at Country Meadows Bethlehem. Born on June 6, 1927 in Calvin, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late Flossie (Milner) and Raymond Wallace. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Charlene in 1991 and their son Thomas in 1973. He was the husband of Joyce A. (Howells) Wallace for the past 20 years. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma in 1953, with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering, he served as a member of the Universitys School of Engineering and Environmental Science Visiting Council from 1991-1992. Bill co-founded the architectural/engineering firm Wallace & Watson Associates P.C. in 1967 and was Chairman of its Board until he retired in December 1992. Under his leadership the firm designed buildings for many of the major corporations and institutions throughout the Lehigh Valley, Mid Atlantic region and Tempe, Arizona, including projects for local, state and federal government. Prominent projects include: the Allentown Hilton; the Main Terminal at Lehigh Valley International Airport; Fuller Company World Headquarters; additions to Muhlenberg Hospital Center; Lehigh Valley, St. Lukes and Easton Hospitals; the U.S. Postal facility in L.V.I.P. Other major buildings included structures on the Lehigh University, Muhlenberg, Moravian, Northampton and Lehigh Community College Campuses. The firms largest project involved 13 separate buildings including the main office of the Burns Harbor Plant (Indiana) for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Bill was President of the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1969 and a Director of the Pennsylvania Society of Architects from 1974-1981 when he was appointed by Governor Thornburg to a six year term on the Pennsylvania Architecture Licensure Board. After serving as President for four consecutive years, Bill was reappointed by Governor Casey for two additional four year terms. For ten years Bill was the Pennsylvania representative (two years as Chairman) to the Middle Atlantic Conference of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards which is made up of Licensure Boards from all U.S. State and Territories. Six of those years he served on the committee which wrote the examination given annually to all candidates for licensure throughout the country. Believing strongly in community service he actively served in many Lehigh Valley non-profit organizations as a member and officer of their Governing Boards. Bill was involved with the Minsi Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America from 1977 until the mid 90s. He was elected to three one year terms as President of the Council and his service to the Boy Scouts was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award. In 1991 the Council acknowledged his life time achievements by presenting him with their highest honor, the Distinguished Citizen Award. Bill was Director of the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce for ten years and President in 1970 and 1971; Director of Bethlehem Red Cross for six years and Vice President from 1976-1981. He was a Rotarian, Director of Kiwanis and Director of Historic Bethlehem, Inc. for twelve years, serving one term as Vice President. Deeply concerned about Economic Development, he was the founding Director of the South Side 76 Housing Development Corporation (Bethlehem) and Bethlehem Risk Corporation; member of the Executive Committee for Greater Bethlehem for eight years; Director of Lehigh Valley Industrial Park from 1970-1980; Director of the Industrial Development Corporation of the Lehigh Valley and its funding arm; and the Lehigh Economic Advancement Project (LEAP) in the early 1970s. Bill was a shareholder in Pocono Recreation Inc. and was among the organizers who planned and rebuilt Split Rock Lodge (Lake Harmony) after it was demolished by fire. He taught a graduate course in Planning as an Adjunct Professor at Lehigh University and assisted in establishing courses in Architecture at Northampton Community College Bethlehem Area Vo-Tech School and at Lehigh Community College where he was a Director of its Foundation from 1981-1986. He served as Director and Officer of the Bethlehem Club, Director of the Lehigh Valley Mental Health Association and was appointed by the Major of Bethlehem to several committees and task forces for the betterment of the community in the mid 60s to mid 70s. He chaired the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission for four years and was a Trustee of the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts from 1991-1993.As Trustee and Secretary for Muhlenberg Hospital Center, he served on numerous committees including Executive, Finance and Planning and in 1977 was a member of the task force which negotiated the merger with Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. Until the late 90s he was a Trustee and past President of the Muhlenberg Hospital Center Foundation and a member of the LVH & H Network Board and a Director of the Executive Service Corporations of the Lehigh Valley. Survivors: Wife; daughters, Nancy Humes and husband Harry of Lenhartsville; Jane Kramer and husband Steven of Bethlehem; Kathleen West of Allentown; son David of Wernersville; and three grandchildren

Charles Mellick

We great regret we share the new of the death of Mr. Charles Mellick husband of church member Mary Lou Mellick.

Charles Mellick, of Bethlehem passed away January 11, 2012. He was the husband of Mary Lou Mellick for 30 happy years. Charles was born in St. Clair, PA, May 25, 1926, son of the late Mary and Charles Mulick (Mellick) and stepson of the late Waysel Tyciak. Charles graduated from Whitehall High School in 1944. He was an Army veteran and proudly served his country during WWII. He started his long career and his love of cars by owning a gas station at Front and Tilghman streets in Allentown in the 1940s. Charles then owned Mell Auto Sales for many years and at the time of his death he owned Adams Brothers, Inc. Charles was a long time parishioner of Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church. Survivors: He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife, Mary Lou; stepchildren, Robert Whisler and his wife Bonnie; Elizabeth Stevenson and her husband Richard and Suzanne Conklin and her husband Richard; as well as his grandchildren, Richard, Eddie, Michael, Joseph, Nancy and William. He is also survived by his stepsisters, Anna Kalata and Jennie Pecsek; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Stanley and his sister Sue.
